Nagaland: Lamhainamdi shooting victims laid to rest; police force intensified

The three men who were shot dead by armed assailants on Monday afternoon at Lamhainamdi village in Peren district of Nagaland were laid to rest at the same village, on Tuesday.
The trio was shot dead by unknown miscreants while they were working in their plots.
Their vehicles, along with some houses in the village, were also burnt.
Some suspect the incident to be an outcome of a land dispute while others believe that the act could have been carried out by militants.
Nagaland Director General of Police TJ. Longkumer informed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by a DIG rank officer, has been set up.
"We have increased the strength of the force there; we have sent one company of Indian Reserve (IR) Battalion, one unit of Special Task Force and today (Tuesday) morning, combing operation in the area was carried out,” added Longkumer.
The police chief said that as per the initial report, the police recovered one weapon from the area, however, it is yet to be confirmed whether the weapon was used in the firing.
He said that IGP (Range) Limasunep Jamir has been sent to the location to verify all the facts.
When enquired whether the three deceased persons were the same people who were abducted by the NSCN-U (Unification) on March 2, Longkumer replied in the negative, stating that the three were different persons.
When asked whether the assailants belong to any faction group, the DGP said, “It is too early to say whether the miscreants belong to any of the faction groups as nobody has claimed or taken responsibility for the incident.”
"This will be known only after a detailed investigation. It happened in a deep forest and, we have to carry out a detailed survey of the area and get some forensic surveillance,” he added.
The Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of Peren district have called for a bandh on March 23 in protest against the killing of three people at Lamhainamdi village on Monday.
