Northeast India to witness heavy showers; IMD issues warning

States in Northeast India will likely experience heavy rains in the next five days, informed the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Heavy rains will lash Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram till April 2.

IMD has issued a warning stating that heavy rain may lead to localised landslides, mudslides, localised flooding of roads and waterlogging in low-lying areas at some places in south Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.

"Due to influence of strong lower level, south-westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal, widespread rainfall with thunderstorm or lightning at isolated places are very likely over Northeast India," it stated.

IMD further added that maximum activity is likely on March 30 and 31.

Thunderstorms, lightning, hail and, gusty winds with speed reaching 40-50 kilometre per hour will likely strike the region.

IMD has cautioned people to remain indoors and avoid travel.

"People are advised to stay away from all objects that conduct electricity and, farming operations should be suspended during extreme weather period," cautioned the Indian Meteorological Department.
