Meghalaya: Journalist "abused, assaulted" by former sordar of Sohiong, SPC demands apology

A local journalist was allegedly intimidated, abused and assaulted by a former Sordar of Sohiong under East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya while performing his duty on March 20.

According to a release issued by Shillong Press Club (SPC), the video journalist of the T7 news channel, Meban Kharmalki had gone to Len Mawtap village, Sohiong constituency to cover a public meeting on Saturday.

The former sordar of Sohiong identified as Komel Nongbri abused and assaulted the journalist when he tried to ask some questions.

"The incident left Kharmalki shocked and shaken," the statement read.

A public meeting was organised by the people, who are opposing the construction of a public ground under the Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana (PMKKY) scheme amounting to Rs 22.50 lakh.

The residents are opposing the construction work as there was no explanation, or clarity about the scheme from the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO).

"Much to everyone’s dismay, Nongbri chose to be violent and displayed the most uncouth and uncivilised behaviour unbecoming of any sane and decent person," SPC said.

The SPC has demanded an unconditional public apology from Komel Nongbri with immediate effect upon publication/broadcast of this statement, failing which it will proceed with the matter as per the law.

"SPC reiterates its commitment to serve the people despite various constraints from time to time by faithfully disseminating factual information which sometimes may not be palatable to all but is important information for public discourse and response," the statement further read.
