Mawryngkneng strong bastion for Congress, says NPP president Kharlukhi

Meghalaya's National People's Party (NPP) president, Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi, on February 18, said that Congress legislator Charles Pyngrope proved he has a firm hold of Mawryngkneng since his family represented the constituency for the fourth consecutive term.
"He (Charles) has proved his dominance in Mawryngkneng since he had ensured his son, (L) David Arnold Nongrum's victory in two elections after deciding to contest from Nongthymmai. Nobody can deny this," Kharlukhi told reporters.
"However, the prospect of the Congress in the upcoming Mawryngkneng bye-election looks very bleak after the decision of Pyngrope's family that none of the family members would contest the bye-election," Kharlukhi said.
"It would have been different if someone from the family would have contested. It would not have been an easy election for us," he said.
Meanwhile, the NPP state president informed that the party MDC from Sohryngkham and KHADC chairman Pyniaid Sing Syiem is likely to be the official candidate for the Mawryngkneng bye-election.
When asked about the statement made by the acting president of the People's Democratic Front (PDF), Banteidor Lyngdoh, of not being in favour to put up a common candidate in the forthcoming bye-election,
Kharlukhi stated that he agrees with the statement since all parties would like to contest the election.
He also recalled that the PDF had fielded a candidate for the bye-election in Shella even though the NPP had backed UDP MLA, Balajied Kupar Synrem.
"I don't see there will be a common candidate for the MDA in the Mawryngkneng bye-election," Kharlukhi said.
