IMPHAL:

Manipur Rajya Sabha MP and titular king of Manipur Sanajaoba Leishemba demanded the Centre to set up an Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in the region, as “the state has no institute of national importance at par with IITs and IIMs.”

Leishemba made the demand in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday and said that several scientists from the state are performing well at the national and international level.

“Therefore, an institute that can focus on core scientific research is needed in the region,” Leishemba said.

“The people of Manipur wish to embrace the new culture of education for training the young minds in basic science and fundamental research,” he said and appealed to the Centre to support Manipur in the various fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research.

“Out of the seven IISER in the country, none of them are in the Northeastern region,” he added.
