Forest Department kick starts tree plantation drive on 4th anniversary of the BJP led government in Manipur

IMPHAL: 

As part of the ongoing celebration of the four years of achievement by the Government, Awangbow Newmai, Minister of Forest, Environment and Climate Change kick started the tree plantation drive at Cheiraoching, Imphal West on March 11. 

Addressing media persons, Newmai said that the aim of the programme is to re-look at the achievements of the Forest Department in the last four years and to continue various developmental programmes.

“The department has undertaken plantation drives in a total area of 22,730 hectares in the last four years,” said Awangbow Newmai.

The Forest minister also said that the State is pursuing a project proposal at the Centre which will be an alternative for the jhum cultivators. 

He also added that Manipur is among the highest forest cover states (as per percentage of total geographical area) in India with 75.46 per cent as compared to the recommendation set under the National Forest Policy that 66 per cent forest cover must be in the mountains and hilly regions. 

Newmai sought the cooperation from all the stakeholders of the society in helping the Forest Department in the conservation and protection of the forest and wildlife in the State. 

The function was also attended by Additional Chief Secretary MH Khan, officials of the Forest Department among others.
