GUWAHATI:

Three railway workers sustained minor injuries in a blast which occurred in a bogie tank when two of them were engaged in welding activity in the (railway) carriage and wagon workshop at New Bongaigaon, Assam on Wednesday.

The injured have been identified as Subhash Ghose (58), Subhash Ray(54) and Nandeswar Singha (55).

Ghose was discharged from hospital after he was administered first aid while the other two workers are under medical care at New Bongaigaon Railway Hospital.

According to Dipak Sharma, New Bongaigaon workshop branch secretary of Northeast Frontier Railway's Employees' Union, the blast occurred when Nandeswar was engaged in welding work on the bogie tank wagon for loading petroleum products at the wagon shop of the workshop assisted by Ray.

But as Ghose was working on top of the tank, there was an explosion following which a thick layer of black smoke engulfed the spot.

"The incident occurred because of the negligence of the chief workshop manager in regard to maintenance of the safety protocols for the workers. Besides, the entire work has been allotted to private contractors without proper vigilance", Sharma alleged.
