GUWAHATI:

The bodies of four picnickers, including two minors, were recovered from Brahmaputra River at Baghmara, about 15 kilometres to the west of Jorhat town in Upper Assam, police confirmed on Wednesday.

The four victims, including a woman, were among a group of 13 picnickers who had boarded a country boat which capsized in the Brahmaputra River on Tuesday.

They have identified the deceased as Rajia Tikala (24), Sufian Chahun (9), Sahil Chahun (15) and Paban Rai (30).

A team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) had launched search operations after being informed by police about the missing picnickers.

Meanwhile, an inquiry was ordered into the incident, and the circle officer will submit a report within 15 days.

Despite being aware of the hazards of taking commuters on country boats beyond their capacity, boatmen still indulge in such rides for earning that extra buck.
