Tripura: TFDPC, Second Corporation to receive global recognition

AGARTALA: If we want to name any corporation for receiving global recognition through continuous commitment to work, then the Tripura Forest Development and Plantation Corporation Limited (TFDPCL) comes first in our mind. TFDPC is the first corporation in the northeastern region and second in the country to bag the International Forest Management Certification from Germany based Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Receiving the certificate, the Corporation has joined the league of only 13 companies in the country who have achieved the recognition.

"This is a great recognition for TFDPC for its continuous commitment to sustainability and excellent overall performance over the years," an official of the TFDPC said.

Apart from rehabilitation of degraded forestlands through rubber plantation, the Corporation has targeted for rehabilitation of tribal shifting cultivators through rubber plantations, promoting forest or rubber based industries and enhancing scope of employment for the rural people and promoting eco-friendly rubber wood to reduce pressure on natural forests.

An official record confirmed that the Corporation produced a total of 2995.93 MT rubber in 2013-14, hiked from the previous financial year which was 2701.51 MT. In 2011-12, the rate of rubber production was 2267.88 MT and in 2010-11, the production was 2572.68 MT.

The rubber production rate was highest in the past five years in 2009-10 at 3104.31 MT.

The TFDPC is planning to extend rubber wood timber treatment plant to Unakoti and South Tripura District and to set up tyre and tube industry in joint venture.

The TFDPC was set up as a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) of the Tripura government in 1976 for commercial plantation of rubber on degraded forest land. In the last 34 years, the Corporation had raised 11673 hectares of rubber plantations. Out of the total, 2577 hectares have been dedicated for rehabilitation of Scheduled Tribe (ST), Scheduled Caste (SC) and Other Backward Class (OBC).
