SHILLONG | SEPT 24, 2020:

The Meghalaya Government has started the process of e-auctioning extracted coal as directed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The NGT Committee had earlier approved the pilot-basis auction of 2 out of 32 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of coal.

While addressing reporters, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that at one point, concerns were raised by the NGT as it wanted the state government to transport the coal from the quarry to the coal depot. According to him, the state government had earlier proposed to allow the miners to transport the coal from the quarry to the coal depot since it was difficult for the state government to do so.

However, the proposal was turned down by the Tribunal. Sangma said that the state government finally had to approach the district level and the Deputy Commissioners to call the tendering process locally which brought a response from local bidders in two of the districts. He said that they are hopeful now that they will be able to move things faster.

This kind of unforeseen thing did come up and the state government will have to follow the rules and the laws, Sangma added.
