Meghalaya: NPP, other forces responsible for Lapang’s decision to quit Congress

Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, Dr Mukul Sangma said that former veteran Congress leader, Dr D.D. Lapang was adamant to re-consider his decision and" it looks like he has pre-determined plan".

"During a one hour long discussion, he (Dr Lapang) had out-rightly refused my request to reconsider his decision.  I have made an earnest effort to persuade him but he continues to say no," Dr Sangma said while talking to newsmen here today.

While replying to a query, the former Chief Minister said that not only the NPP but there are other forces who are responsible for the decision of Dr Lapang to desert the Congress.

When asked if the former veteran Congress leader is looking for a greener pasture, he said "Let us see and wait to know the reality."

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister also denied that the AICC has adopted the policy of phasing out the senior and elder leaders from the party.

"There is no such policy on the part of the AICC. The party leadership only analyse the performance of the leaders who have been given various responsibilities in the party," he said.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh said that they get will get the final word whether the AICC has accepted the resignation of Dr Lapang by Monday.

The MPCC chief also said that there is no truth in the allegations on the part of the Dr Lapang that the AICC is phasing out senior leaders from the party.

"In fact, the names of the leaders, which Lapang had mentioned had been phased out, are still actively working for the party in New Delhi," Dr Lyngdoh told newsmen after the meeting of the MPCC here today.

He also said that the former veteran Congress leader had decided not to contest due to his poor health adding that it is not true that he was denied a Congress ticket.

"Let us not forget, it was Dr Lapang who had blessed the present MLA of Nongpoh, Mayral Born Syiem to take his place. The question of side-lining and not giving him ticket is a non-issue," the MPCC chief said.

Dr Celestine also added that Dr Lapang was not forced to go out as the MPCC president.

"He (Dr Lapang) had gone to Delhi to request the central leadership to relieve him as the MPCC chief due to his poor health condition," he added.
