Leishemba urges Assam CM to include Manipuri as an associate official language
IMPHAL | SEPT 24, 2020:
Rajya Sabha MP and titular king of Manipur, Sanajaoba Leishemba, has urged Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to include Manipuri language as an associate official language of Assam.
In a letter to Sonowal, Leishemba said that inclusion of Manipuri language as an associate official language of Assam would "protect the identity, history, culture, and tradition of Manipuris in Assam," adding that "the historic love, bond and relationship of Manipur and Assam would be further strengthened."
Leishemba also stated that Manipuris all over the world would be indebted to the Sonowal-led government as well.
We may note that Manipuri bodies such as the Youth's Action Committee for Protection of Indigenous People and the Manipur Youth Front of Assam have been demanding for the inclusion of Manipuri language as an associate official language of Assam. Manipuri is one of the 22 recognised languages in India.
