Landslides cause catastrophic damage and loss of life in Shillong

SHILLONG | SEPT 26, 2020:

Five people lost their lives in a catastrophic landslide which destroyed multiple houses in Lumparing Parmaw area on Friday.

According to police sources, five people had gone missing following the occurrence of a landslide on Friday morning.

Police identified the victims as Firoza Khan (40), Reziya Ahmed (38), Bela Ahmed (40), Imaded Nongrum (60), and Kayam Uddin (42).

Residents stated that the landslide occurred around 6:00 am following heavy and continuous rainfall.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), in a joint effort with the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) team, arrived at the scene and took up the task of recovering the bodies despite the incessant rain.

In another incident, residents of Madanriting Block-D pulled out 10-year-old Jasmine Thongni and her mother from the debris of a landslide that buried them in their sleep.

The child passed away but is survived by her mother, who was later admitted to Civil Hospital, Shillong.

The SDRF also responded to a minor landslide at Nongrimmaw, Laitumkhrah, where a portion of a retaining wall collapsed.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed his concern regarding the loss of innocent lives and said that the state government is working to ensure the restoration of roads that have been disrupted because of landslides.

Besides this, the India Metrological Department (IMD) has issued warnings in East Khasi Hills district; with heavy to very heavy rainfall to extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days.
