Death toll in Assam floods rises to 118
GUWAHATI | SEPT 27, 2020:
The flood death toll in Assam has gone up to 118 with the latest casualty reported from Nagaon district, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) informed here.
One person drowned at Kampur where the Kopili river is in spate, while a population of over 1.78 lakh remains affected by the fourth wave of floods in five districts of the state, the ASDMA reported on Saturday.
Nagaon remains the worst affected district in terms of affected population with over 1.47 lakh bearing the brunt even as Morigaon, West Karbi Anglong, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur have relatively less number of people affected by the deluge.
An agricultural area of 6,437 hectares across the five districts has been affected so far by the current wave of floods, triggered by the heavy rain that has lashed parts of the state and neighbouring states over the week.
According to the Central Water Commission, along with the Kopili in Nagaon, the river Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat in Jorhat district while the Jia Bharali is in spate at NT Crossing in Sonitpur.
