CSOs demand arrest of rape accused in Manipur
IMPHAL | SEPT 21, 2020:
The Youth's Forum for Protection Of Human Rights (YFPHR) and the Women Action For Development (WAD) has condemned the action of the Moreh Police for not taking any action against a rapist who purportedly raped a three-and-a-half-year-old minor.
The YFPHR also condemned the village chief for "protecting the child rapist."
The YFPHR also demanded a thorough investigation against the Moreh Police for failing to arrest the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act, 2012, and appealed to the Director-General of Police (DGP) to direct the Tengnoupal SP into taking necessary action.
We may note that on September 15, a three-and-a-half-year-old girl, was raped by her cousin in a village near Moreh but was rescued by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Tengnoupal.
Moreh Police arrested the accused. But they settled the matter through a customary law after a payment of Rs 3.5 lakh.
According to sources, the accused is a close relative of the village chief.
Sources also stated that the YFPHR is taking the case to the Chief Justice and will ask for a suo-moto case to monitor the investigation process.
If sources are to be believed, the YFPHR will also request the Governor of Manipur to assign a SIT to look into such heinous crimes.
