SHILLONG:

Winward Dilcheng Watri Sangma of Pillangkata, Meghalaya has entered the India book of records for covering a maximum distance on a modified bicycle in one hour by pedalling with one hand.

Speaking with TNT-The Northeast Today, Winward expressed his happiness and explained that his main focus was to promote people with disability.

"I feel good and happy to get this award for our State as a sportsperson but, my main motto was to promote disabled people because if they cannot cycle by foot, they can do so with their hands. If we see motivational videos on youtube even though we are not financially stable, we can still try it out but, they are helpless. So I wanted to give an example to them that if there is a will, there is a way."

Sangma said, "Since we could not move out of the State during the pandemic as it was risky, I thought I could do something to motivate others especially the disabled people who might get discouraged and would affect them mentally and emotionally."

He called the owner of Bambookaa Cycles from Mumbai and shared his reason for doing it. The bicycle frame is made out of bamboo and, he customised it and built a 'Hand Crank Bicycle'.

He completed 201 rounds in NSCA Basketball Court, Shillong, and covered 11 kms in one hour with his single right-hand arm.

With the help of his friends, Vivan Archie Umdor, John Earnest Sawian, and many more, they filmed, measured the distance as well as counting the laps and documenting the entire attempt for evidence to submit to the recording team for the verification process.

He mentioned that some more records are on his way but would like to keep it secret for the time being.

Sangma concluded by saying his motto "is always to motivate people and also to promote cycling for a better future."
