AHMEDABAD:

India were 24/1 at the end of the first day of the fourth Test at Ahmedabad on Thursday, trailing by 181 runs.

The England team were bowled out for a "humble" 205 on the opening day of the final test, leaving room for the Indians to capitalise on.

India lost Shumbham Gill in the very first over and, Rohit Sharma (8) and Cheteshwar Pujara (15) remained unbeaten at stumps.

For India, spinners Axar Patel (4/68) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3/47) shared seven wickets between them, while pacer Mohammed Siraj (2/45) also accounted for two batsmen.

For England, all-rounder Ben Stokes top-scored with 55 before being trapped in front by Washington Sundar.

Earlier, England captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat against a "well-tuned" Indian attack.

India is currently leading the series 2-1 and need just a draw or win to qualify for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand to be held in June.

After the final Test, India will play five T20 matches, followed by three ODIs against England.
