Lakadong turmeric is famous in the northeastern state of Meghalaya, and apart from being a cooking ingredient, it is known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Lakadong turmeric is used to treat many health disorders like liver problem, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), skin disease and wounds.

It also comes as no surprise the use of Lakadong turmeric in cosmetics has been continuously increasing.

According to Zizira, the curcumin content in Lakadong Turmeric is 7-12 per cent (last tested in 2020), which is the highest, compared to 2-3 per cent in other varieties of turmeric.

Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric, which has extensive therapeutic effects.

The turmeric from the region is much sought after for its excellent health benefits.

People use it to treat arthritis, heartburn (dyspepsia), joint pain, stomach pain, diarrhoea, intestinal gas, stomach bloating, loss of appetite, gallbladder disorders, high cholesterol, headaches, bronchitis, cold, leprosy, fever, menstrual problems, itchy skin, post-surgical recovery and many other ailments.

Though the taste of turmeric is earthy and bitter and I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to chew it raw, you could always add to your favourite drink.

One tablespoon of turmeric with water, ginger tea, milk, or latte every morning will be a lifesaver.

You could also apply turmeric to treat ringworm, sprains and swellings and acne by making a paste with honey, milk, aloe vera gel or any ingredient of your choice.

If you want to use turmeric as a skin enhancer, you can try a turmeric face mask at home by mixing the turmeric with sandalwood, milk, yogurt or honey. It will lighten the dark patches on your skin.

They also use turmeric as a dyeing agent for clothes and as a colouring agent in food.
