Meghalaya: Recrafting education in Garo Hills

A forum comprising citizens, educationists, academicians, church leaders and NGOs, on Wednesday, met Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and submitted a memorandum which highlighted various suggestions on how to improve the quality of education in Garo Hills.

The forum, under the name ‘Education Forward, 2020’ resolved to set up a core team to coordinate and spearhead a movement to facilitate in revamping the quality of education, and other fundamental pillars of education such as accessibility, equity, and affordability.

The first suggestion by the forum included the filling up of vacant posts (DSEO & SDSEO) in Ampati, Baghmara, Resubelpara, Tura, and Williamnagar.

The forum also informed the Chief Minister about the absence of principals in several schools, namely Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Tura, Government Higher Secondary School, Dadenggre Puri, Government Higher Secondary School, Dalu and Government Higher Secondary School, Rongreggri, Williamnagar.

The forum sought the creation of a system with a framework for better coordination and synchronization between MBOSE and other allied departments with no conflict of interest.

“The modification of the notification on selection tests allowing all secondary schools, both affiliated and unaffiliated private schools, to conduct the tests in their respective schools for both Class X & Class XII, during January and February and pre-board tests before the final examinations by the MBOSE is required to ensure better performance and results,” the forum said.

The group also believed that frequent training for lower primary and upper primary school teachers with better participation would go a long way in improving the quality of education.

“With the ever-increasing change in knowledge landscape, the current policy might be revisited, whereby students are made to give due diligence again in major subjects like mathematics and science. We request you to look into each one of the highlighted issues and seek your indulgence to ensure the highest quality of education is given to the youth of our state,” the forum added.
