Twitter on Friday was flooded with tweets on the updated terms of service and privacy policy of popular messaging app WhatsApp as netizens debate on whether to move to a better and reliable platform such as Telegram.

But what is this updated policy announced by WhatsApp that got netizens talking?

The updated policy will enable WhatsApp to share user data with its parent company Facebook. Users have till February 8, 2021, to accept these to continue using the platform. The ‘take it or leave it’ attitude of WhatsApp was what everybody is talking about.

WhatsApp was formed as a free, cross-platform messaging app in 2009, and four years later, it gained over 400 million monthly users. Seeing this, Facebook bought the platform in 2014, and gradually changed the way it accessed user data from WhatsApp.

The updated WhatsApp terms will help Facebook, and connected third-party apps exploit user data for commercial gain, including personal data - which can be considered a breach of privacy.

Now netizens are opting for a way out of WhatsApp and choose other messaging platforms to meet your requirements without having their privacy compromised. And Telegram is the alternative.

What is Telegram?

Telegram is a freeware, cross-platform, cloud-based instant messaging, video calling, and VoIP service. Telegram was launched in 2013 by brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov.

Previously, the pair founded the Russian social network VK, which they left when it was taken over by the Mail.ru Group.

On April 24, 2020, Telegram announced it had reached 400 million monthly active users.

Telegram provides unlimited storage, as they save all the data on their cloud. It provides users with ‘Media Compression’, which allows the users to compress large documents. If a normal chatting group exceeds the 200-user mark, Telegram transforms the group to a Super Group with a capacity of 5,000 users.

WhatsApp or Telegram - What would you choose?

** Like WhatsApp, it also provides end-to-end encryption feature with a timer. If the timer hits 0, the chats will self-destruct to ensure the privacy of chats. WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption everywhere, while Telegram uses it only for secret chat.

** Unlike Telegram, WhatsApp supports both voice and video calls. It also informs the sender about the delivery and reads the status of others on time.

** Some argued Telegram has more features and great updates regularly.

Given all the points, would you say Telegram is much faster than WhatsApp?
