Christmas tree, presents, cakes and family are just a few to name this Christmas and New Year but this time the Mizoram government is saying 'NO' to Crackers and Pyrotechnics. When we were small there was no restriction on the usage of fire crackers during New Year events leaving aside the festival of lights Diwali which we celebrate as one family engaging with other communities.
The decision on the ban of crackers came  on Friday in a meeting chaired by the Mizoram Home Minister R. Lalzirliana. It goes on to say that it appeals to all local and village councils to make public announcements about the prohibition and all churches will appealed to educate their members not to use the same. Why mix cocktails with politics and religion if the government is serious to curb climate change after the recent Sustainable Mountain Development Summit held at Aizawl. Attention should also be paid to serious social issues which still have an impact on youths in the state.
Mizoram is a state where youth impacted by drug abuse is one of the highest in number in India. I request the concerned authorities to first channel their energies in the right direction rather than banning crackers only for a few days that will not even make much of an impact. Personally, I see no logic in the ban but why not take a look into various ways of channeling the youths into employment and fighting the war on drugs?
Yours Faithfully
