Respected Editor,
National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB) statistics pointed that crime against women is increasing by more than 200 percent over the last two decades with rape incidents listing the top. Latest case coming from Nongthymmai of a 48-year old man alleged of raping a nine year old from the same building which he resided. Once again the lack of vigilance amongst society can just be the tip of the iceberg.
The ailing justice system has always been looked as the major culprit, if we introspect into ourselves the blame lies elsewhere. Agitations on the street or ranting on social media has been a daily affair but where are the firefighting tools.
I do understand that any crime committed has to be looked from all angles before coming to a conclusion, we cannot paint the brush on every other person on the street. Streamlining the justice system with community policing might be the answer but would the stakeholders be ready for this? Meghalaya before it heads into election mode has to piggyback such issues and create mechanisms whereby the perpetrator would not roam freely in the streets. We still have time before we become the top state in the whole of the northeastern region in terms of crime against women.
