EDITORIAL | Will Manipur’s m-Pension App give pensioners an edge?

 |

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK:

The Government of Manipur recently launched the m-Pension App to assist pensioners without them having to go to the treasury office.

The m-Pension App is a Web App for self-updating a pensioner’s digital photograph. It also provides other facilities like sending feedback to treasuries and making online queries.

It is something which the other states should propose or implement, as pensioners are still susceptible to the current situation (COVID-19).

Technology here proves to be a blessing in disguise, as there is a saying that opportunity lies in adversity.

If the education sector can embrace and create applications for teachers and students to exchange notes through online learning, why not use it across all sectors?

The m-Pension App also utilises Artificial Intelligence(AI) to detect whether the pensioner is alive or dead and will only allow uploading photographs taken from living individuals.

The process of timely delivery of pension to the beneficiaries via the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system was one way of easing the problems faced by the beneficiaries but with the advent of technology, why not look at other ways to further create a hassle-free culture for the elderly.

It is the right time to bridge the gap as what NITI Aayog chairman recently said that big data, machine learning and 3D printing are what would shape the world ahead of us.
