EDITORIAL | Fractures in Tripura’s political battleground

 |

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK:

Uncertainty prevails over the political landscape in Tripura. The observation is entirely based on the ongoing situation in the northeastern state, which is presently marred with the tension between political parties and their respective followers.

The January 17 attack on state Congress president Pijush Biswas at Bishalgarh in Sepahijala District and the vandalization of CPI(M) MP Jharna Das Baidya’s residence in Matripalli area within 12 hours raised a question over the law and order situation in the state.

Tripura is one such state in the Northeast that frequently witnesses clashes between members and supporters of different political parties – particularly between the BJP and the Congress; the BJP and CPI(M); the BJP and the Indigenous People Front of Tripura (IPFT).

If we look at this from a fresh perspective, we can say that Tripura is a politically active state with equal hype amongst the party supporters. Other states in the Northeast hardly witness any political clashes, except maybe during election times.

Way back in 2019, royal scion Pradyot Manikya Deb Barman, who was the then-president of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), had termed Tripura as the most “politically violent” state in the Northeast.

They do not restrict ideological and political differences to debates on the floor of the house, but these differences frequently spill over to the streets in the form of rallies and demonstrations which often lead to violent clashes.

Not blaming any party or any leader for the current situation that the state is in, but from a layperson’s point of view, frequent occurrences can only paint a dismal picture of the law and order situation in Tripura.

Yesterday’s attack on the Congress and CPI(M) also reflects the intolerance level of supporters and the lack of respect for each other.

The repeated offences committed by miscreants during political rallies and the aftermath of the clashes should be seriously dealt with to ensure that lives and limbs are protected, no matter how politically hyper one is.
