Twitter rants over Gujarat Govt’s decision to rename dragon fruit

 |

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, on Wednesday, said that the state government had decided to rename the dragon fruit as ‘Kamalam’, as it resembles a lotus.

Notably, ‘Kamal’, or lotus, is the poll symbol of the BJP and Gujarat party unit headquarters is named Shri Kamalam.

“The name dragon fruit is not proper, and because of its name, one thinks of China. So we have given it the name Kamalam,” Rupani said.

He also mentioned that there is nothing political behind the renaming of the fruit.

However, the news received many reactions from Twitter users.

“Gujarat Govt. renames #dragonfruit as ‘Kamalam’. Looks like our priority for the nation is set! We were not satisfied renaming the cities, we need to rename vegetables & fruits too. By the way, COVID is on, the economy took a hit, we are in the middle of a pandemic. #JustSaying,” tweeted Indian Master Chef Kunal Kapur.

“Our priority is Dragon fruit! No wonder we are where we are! We weren’t this backward even in the 1920s, I guess!” Radio Jockey Sayema Rahman tweeted.
