17 armymen dead, 19 injured in massive fire at ammunition depot
NEW DELHI: An ammunition depot in Maharashtra's Pulgaon caught a major fire today killing 17 and injuring 19 in the incident.
An inquiry has been ordered into the incident and a Special Investigation Team is being constituted to look into the cause of fire.
The incident took place between 1:30 and 2 am today at the Central Ammunition Depot at Pulgaon, about 110 km from Nagpur.
Two officers and 15 Defence Security Corps (DSC) jawans are among those killed in the fire, said defence sources. The officers killed in the fire have been identified as Lt Col RS Pawar and Major K Manoj.
17 DSC jawans and 2 officers include the injured victims. Defense officials have said one shed at the ammunition depot caught fire. While the main fire has been extinguished, officials have not ruled out secondary fires and explosions.
The village residents close to the ammunition depot have bee evacuated for safety.
PM Narendra Modi has also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and the affected.
