Respected Editor,

After 54 years of attaining statehood, women representative are yet to be seen in the Assembly. Forget the Naga Peace Accord for a time being, but striking a balance in the political arena is what is needed.

A member of United Democratic Party, Rano Shaiza was the first woman from the state who was elected to Lok Sabha in 1977 but died in 2015 due to age-related ailments. This shining example can just thrust a change and create a level playing field.

The role of women cannot be overlooked, they can mediate, negotiate and cool the tongues of fire. Nagaland has been under great stress with the Peace Accord hanging in the balance and recently a number of candidates did try to stay from filing their nominations, in the end the role of money and power does lure anyone into politics.

The state is set to go to polls on February 27 and of the 195 candidates vying for a seat in the 60-member Assembly this time, five are women.

Regards
Yours faithfully
