Women empowerment in Mizoram polls?

The upcoming Mizoram local council and village council polls, a total of 8,491 candidates, including 2,102 women, will be contesting said a state election commission official, on Saturday.

With the village councils in nine districts numbering to 558 and local council within Aizawl municipal numbering to 83, the polling will be on August 27.

The village council has 2,454 seats, of which 630 are for women, and the local council consists of 545 seats, of which 148 are for women.

State Election Commission secretary Teresy Vanlalhruaii told newsmen that at least 6,926 candidates, including 1,685 women are in the fray for village councils polls while a total of 1,565 candidates, including 415 women (for reserved seats) are up for the local council polls.

As per the filing, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) put up 2,438 candidates for the 558 village councils while arch-rival Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) fielded 1,197 candidates.

While other parties such as Congress have fielded 2,075 candidates, BJP – 298, Hmar Peoples Convention (HPC) 6, Mizoram People's Conference (MPC), and National Peoples Party (NPP) have fielded 2 candidates each, she said.

A total of 159 candidates (155 for village council, 4 for a local council) withdrew their nomination papers on the last date of withdrawal on Thursday.
