Tripura: Tension grips Badharghat constituency hours before polling

AGARTALA | Sept 22, 2019:

The stage is set for Badharghat to go to polls on Monday (Sep 23) at 7 am with three major parties — BJP, CPI (M) and Congress in the fray to battle it out for the Assembly seat in Tripura.

The by-election to the constituency was necessitated by the death of BJP MLA Dilip Sarkar in April.

Amid all the political hype, the Opposition parties — CPM and Congress today staged an agitation demanding for a peaceful by-poll in Badharghat constituency.

The Opposition parties have alleged that events of violence and rigging by the ruling BJP have been reported from across the constituency.

BJP MLA Ram Prasad Pal became the centre of all discussion among the Opposition parties who accused the MLA of the ruling party of using "muscle power".

It may be mentioned that an arrest warrant was earlier issued against Pal for poll code violation but was later squashed after Law Minister Ratanlal Nath said that arrest warrant was issued by mistake.

The State Election Department on Saturday assured the voters of a peaceful by poll even as it reiterated that law and order will be maintained.

The Department had also requested voters to cast their votes without fear but no sooner was this assurance made, the constituency is already witnessing signs of trouble.

A huge number of CPI-M and Congress activists and leaders today gathered and block the road in Siddhi Aram.

While opposition members were pasting banners in a shop, some BJP followers allegedly attempted to burn the shop while also attacking the family of the local shop-keeper.

During the road blockade, the protestors have demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and also warned that "if BJP attacks them, they will retaliate."
