AGARTALA: A primary school teacher, who was one among the 10,323 sacked teachers in Tripura, allegedly killed himself by hanging at his home while his wife attempted to "commit" Sati (an abolished custom of widow burning) on January 1 in Wanchang village under Rajnagar police station.

The deceased has been identified as Uttam Tripura, a resident of Rajnagar of South Tripura District.

Uttam Tripura, left behind his wife and his two children.

The deceased’s wife, Shefali, tried to commit ‘Sati’ from agony and laid down on the prepared cremation structure of her husband but was dissuaded from doing so by her in-laws and neighbours.

Uttam Tripura was a labourer even after passing the ‘Madhyamik’ examination. In 2014, he was employed as a primary school teacher, according to his parents.

After being terminated from service with effect from April 1 last year, Uttam yet again fell into a deep financial crisis as he had no other means to support his family.

His family stated that he even took a loan to support his family but, was not in a condition to repay the loan.
