Tripura royal scion announces formation of non-political party to fight CAA

AGARTALA | Dec 26, 2019:

The former Tripura Congress president and royal scion, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Tuesday organized a meeting with different tribal leaders at Ujjayanta Palace after which it was announced that a new non-political party will formed to fight against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA).

The new party has been named as The Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA). According to Prodyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, TIPRA is a non-political party whose objective will be to fight for the socio-economic development of the tribal people of Tripura. He also said that TIPRA will oppose the CAA and protest against the new citizenship law.

Pradyout also announced that his new party TIPRA will organize a rally at Agartala on January 8 to oppose the CAA.

Pradyot said he had a meeting with union home minister Amit Shah regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) recently where he had told the union home minister that he would move the apex court against the new law.

Along with several other petitioners, Pradyot had also filed a petition in the Supreme Court opposing enactment of the CAA and during its recent hearing, the apex court had issued notices to the government of India seeking a reply from the government on how it intent to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act in Tripura when it had already signed the Instrument of Accession, Tripura National Volunteers (TNV) accord and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) accord where it was stated that the Government is to ensure the safety, protect the culture and identity of the indigenous people of Tripura.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will hear the other pleas over CAA in mid-January.
