Tripura: Indigenous groups angered after video of ambulance attack by security personnel goes viral

Januay 9, 2019 was a tragic day for several protesters in Tripura who took part in the Northeast Bandh called by North East Students' Organization (NESO) to oppose the passage of Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 which was passed in the Lok Sabha on the same day.

The day witnessed unprovoked firing by security personnel at Madhavbari in West Tripura area that led to injury of almost 15 persons. 6 of them were seriously injured, of which 2 were in critical condition and 1 was shifted to Kolkata due to being shot at in the chest.

The injured were taken to Kherengbar Hospital in Khumulwng, the headquarters of the tribal autonomous council. Four who were critically injured and referred to a hospital in the state capital of Agartala.

As per a video in possession with TNT- The Northeast Today which has also gone viral in various social media forums, one can see an ambulance plying on the road which is suddenly halted by the security personnel who begin hitting the ambulance. Things then seem to turn ugly as the occupants remain in the vehicle while the security continues to attack the ambulance. The video was taken on January 9, on the day of Northeast Bandh.

After the attack, the injured protesters were brought back to Kherengbar Hospital, where the district police finally sent personnel to escort them to Agartala.

It may be mentioned that an FIR was also filed against 5 members of Twipra Students' Federation. The police were quoted by the media as saying that they had found a country gun in possession with the members.

Ajit Singh, superintendent of police of West Tripura district while speaking to the Scroll has however voiced doubts about what the footage really showed and said- "In the video it is not clear that police are attacking the ambulance," he said. "In the video nobody is seen attacking the ambulance." He added that he was looking into "what went wrong" and that the guilty would be punished.

The ambulance attack incident coupled with that of unprovoked firingh as sparked anger from various indigenous communities in Tripura.

Tripura's Royal Scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma has come out openly to condemn the unprovoked firing incident. In a recent Facebook post, he has also revealed that he has been receiving intimidating calls and indirect threats for posting the video of the Indiscriminate firing of the TSR in his Facebook Page.

He was also quoted as writing in his Facebook post, " Others especially people in charge of IT Cell dept of one political party have started spreading a propaganda against me".
