Tripura: Doctor attacked by locals for ‘refusing’ to pay Saraswati Puja subscription

In yet another ugly incident, a doctor was beaten up by locals in Bwngnang area, six kms away from Dharmanagar yesterday. The injured doctor, Shubhendu Debbarma is now undergoing treatment at GB Hospital.
After the incident came to light, health department officials and the locals issued statements though the police are inquiring into the matter on the basis of statement given by the injured doctor Shubhendu Debbarma.
Sources said that local people beat up Dr Shubhendu Debbarmna, who is also in charge of Bwngnang primary health centre, allegedly because of not paying Saraswati Puja subscription. "Shubhendu Debbarma was physically assaulted and suffered inflicted injuries," sources said.
However, some elderly people rescued the doctor and got him shifted to north district hospital in Dharmangar town where his initial treatment was done.
The officials of the health department in Dharmanagar have lodged a complaint and said that Dr Shubhendu Debbarma had been assaulted in an unprovoked manner and a police complaint had been lodged.
Meanwhile a delagation of IPFT headed by Minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia today visited the victim.
The Royal Scion of Tripura and the Chairman of The Indegeneous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA), Pradyot Manikya Debbarman has also condemned the incident.
"What is this goondaism that is prevailing in our state? Will the Chief Minister react and make an example of these thugs who in the name of goddess extort money? We are waiting because action speaks louder than words ….This Culture started by Certain politically backed Clubs under previous regimes has to end, because the communists have gone but the loyalty has changed hands to the new regime. They are nobody's friend," Manikya posted on Facebook.
