Tripura’s Deputy Leader of Opposition Badal Choudhury’s residence came under attack from unknown miscreants at Belonia College Square area in South District on February 25.

The CPI (M) alleged that the attack on Hrishyamukh MLA’s house was “planned and carried out by BJP-backed miscreants”.

CPI(M) Belonia Subdivision Secretary Tapas Datta informed that the miscreants attacked Choudhury’s residence around 9 am on Thursday by resorting to stone-pelting.

He informed that the MLA’s 80-yr-old elder brother and his wife were inside the house when the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, the local BJP leader, Ashesh Baidya, denied the allegations of being involved in the attack.

He said that a rally was organised by the local people at the Belonia area to demand from the CPI(M) to return the money embezzled in the Rose Valley scam.

“They also demanded the arrest of Badal Choudhury and the then Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar. The agitators went to Badal Choudhury’s house and raised their demands,” he said.

However, according to sources, the procession at the Belonia area was led by BJP Mandal president Ashesh Baidya.

“The agitators went to Badal Choudhury’s house and gheraoed his residence. There were a few women in front of the procession, and the miscreants were behind,” sources said.

The women had demanded the arrest of Badal Chowdhury and in no time; the crowd started surrounding Badal Chowdhury’s house and stone-pelting ensued, sources said.

The matter was brought under control when the police arrived at the spot to disperse the crowd.

Notably, in the last Assembly election campaign, the BJP had promised to investigate the Rose Valley scam case and punish all the culprits involved in the scam.

Meanwhile, within minutes of the matter being reported, the CPI (M) staged a protest rally in the town of Belonia.

The CPI (M) has “strongly” condemned the attack and demanded the immediate arrest of all the culprits.

“Earlier, Badal Chowdhury was kept in jail on false charges. The government could not file a charge sheet against him in a year and a half,” CPI (M) sub-divisional secretary Tapas Datta alleged.

CPI (M) leaders later met the South Tripura Superintendent of Police and submitted a memorandum.
