Students’ body condemns attack on Chakma student in JNV, demands strict action

The Central Mizoram Chakma Students' Union (CMCSU), the apex students body of the Chakmas of Mizoram on Monday condemned the harassment of one boy by a group of students at the hostel of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) at Thenzawl in Serchhip District, Mizoram.

The incident took place on September 26 at JNV hostel and the victim has been identified as Nolin Bikash Chakma, a student of Class XII.

According to a press release issued by the Union, a student from the same University had lost Rs. 1000, after which a meeting was called in among the students. They had called upon the suspected student one by one in a seperate room. Nolin was one among the students, who was in a line.

The union further alleged that the students continued to beat Nolin for hours, even after repeated request that he had not done anything. Later, after he was severely injured, he was shifted to Aizawl for treatment on 29 September 2019.

The students' body states,"in Serchhip District of Mizoram, and demand swift and impartial investigation and stern action against the culprits. The repeated incidents of brutalities against the Chakma students in JNV schools in Mizoram have left the Chakma students demoralized, fearful and psychologically
affected forever".

The students' body has urged the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti and the Central Government to take up the matter seriously and also to establish a JNV school at Chakma dominated areas in Mizoram.
