Sikkim: Two rebel SDF MLAs join ruling SKM

After the mass defections of opposition SDF MLAs to BJP, two more opposition members have formally joined the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha(SKM) party yesterday.

Em Prasad Sharma, MLA from Namcheybong and GT Dhungel, MLA from Upper Tadong have joined the ruling Morcha citing regional aspirations.

They have stated that when SDF legislators had asked them to merge with BJP, they opposed the move.

In recent past, the two rebel SDF MLAs had defied party decision not to boycott assembly and had attended the budget session.

These MLAs had also requested the Speaker to be provided separate seating bloc away from SDF, which they were provided.

With the formal joining of the two MLAs to the ruling party, SKM now has 18 members in the 32-member Sikkim Legislative Assembly. The current strength of the assembly is 29 with three vacant seats.

After mass defection of SDF MLAs to BJP, the current composition of the house is SKM 18, BJP 10 and SDF 1. Former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling is now the sole member of the SDF party.
