Sikkim Sherpa Protection Board demands Bharat Ratna for legendary mountaineer

GANGTOK | SEPT 17, 2020:

The Sikkim Sherpa Protection Board (SSPB), on Thursday, expressed its gratitude to Darjeeling MP Raju Bista for raising the long overdue demand of awarding the Bharat Ratna to legendary mountaineer (L) Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

Tenzing Norgay Sherpa was one of the first two individuals known to reach the summit of Mount Everest, which he accomplished with Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953.

It was a proud moment for every Indian as the tricolour stood atop Mount Everest for the very first time.

The SSPB stated that several nations across the globe recognised Sherpa's contributions, but India has failed to confer the Bharat Ratna to the most eligible person for the last 67 years.

"We hope that BJP government will take the cognizance of injustice meted out to the lion of Himalaya and confer Bharat Ratna to Tenzing Norgay Sherpa at earliest. We further take this opportunity to request our MPs from Sikkim to take a similar stand on the issue," they said.
