Sikkim: Police rescue group of people on picnic party from drowning in Teesta river

GANGTOK | January 8, 2020:

In a joint operation by the Sevoke Police and Mungpong Police, yesterday rescued group of people from drowning who were on a picnic party at Teesta River.

The incident happened when suddenly the water level at the river started increasing and the people along with their vehicle was stuck in between. The water level was increasing from both the sides.

The Sevoke Police and the Mungpong Police got note of this and jointly started a rescue operation at 6 pm in the evening and rescued the people safely at around 9:30 pm.

According to sources, the incident happened because the dam situated at Kalijhora – in West Bengal stretch of the arterial national highway that leads to Sikkim – releases water from the dam time to time.

Honking is done by NHPC at Kalijhora but the sound does not reach the area and people are unaware that water is being released.
