AGARTALA | October 22, 2019:

In a meeting of the BJP dominated Bharat Chandra Nagar panchayat samity today ended in a violent clash between two groups of elected members and their supporters.

Altogether seven persons-all BJP supporters-sustained injuries, while five of them were released after first aid, and two members were seriously injured and rush to Belonia hospital.

Official sources from Belonia said that a meeting of the Bharat Chandra Nagar panchayat samity, scheduled to come off today, began in time but soon tempers ran high over the contentious issue of distributing benefits of 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana' among common people.

All the elected members owing allegiance to BHP had made commitments to their supporters and electors that the benefits would be made available to them. But soon it emerged that all the members would not be allocated quota for the scheme.

Since all the members are keen to make available the benefits to their supporters and electors tempers soon frayed and ultimately things degenerated into clashes.

Pradeep Chakraborty, a member of the Panchayat Samity, led his supporters to an attack on other members and, as a result, at least seven members including the chairman sustained injuries.

Security has been beefed up all over Belonia and Bharat Chandra Nagar to head off any further trouble over the issue.
