AGARTALA | July 26, 2019:

The Supreme Court will take up the case filed by Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President and royal scion, Pradyot Manikya Deb Burman seeking compensation from the state government for the violence meted in the state post the Lok Sabha polls 2019.

The case filed by Manikya after the Lok Sabha elections against the Election Commission of India, being an agency that conducted the election in Tripura, has been registered and will come up for hearing next week.

When contacted, the TPCC president said that it is the duty of the state government to ensure the safety and security of its citizens for which it "failed" to do so and could not protect the citizens of the state.

In a case of a failure, compensation should be paid by the government because it was their "inefficiency" which led to post poll violence in the state, he added.

"The ECI had moved the central forces, so who is responsible? So I had filed a case in SC and the court has admitted the matter and if I win the case, compensation will be paid to all the people who were victims of the violence", he said.

Stating that the fact the Apex Court has taken up the matter is a victory for those who suffered at the hands of miscreants post polls, Manikya said "If we win the case, the state government would have to pay a huge compensation to all those affected victims, whose house were burned down, properties damaged and those citizens who lost their lives including those who were physically abused and harmed by miscreants".

Manikya also expressed his gratitude to Congress leaders — Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Salman Khurshid for their support.

"To all our Congress workers, I promised to fight for you and I will fight till the end," said the state Congress President.

While stating that the case is strong, Manikya expressed confidence of winning the case.
