NATIONAL | March 20, 2019:

The main accused in the Rs 14,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud
Nirav Modi, a fugitive diamond merchant was arrested in London, according to a Times Now report.

Nirav was arrested by the Scotland Yard and will be produced in Westminster Court at around 3:30 pm, following which he is expected to seek bail.

The case will then follow a similar pattern through the UK courts as that of liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who remains on bail since his arrest on an extradition warrant in April 2017. On Monday, the Westminster Court had issued an arrest warrant against Nirav.

According to Times of India report, Nirav Modi had entered the United Kingdom (UK) on a golden visa. It is a tier-1 visa which British government issues to investors outside the European Union (EU) on a commitment to invest about £2 million in UK government bonds or shares of a company, the ToI had reported earlier citing sources.

The publication mentioned that the visa was issued to the beleaguered diamond merchant on his Indian passport.

Since January 2018 he had been on the run from India. A case has been filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) declaring him as an economic offender under a new law which was enacted in the year 2018.
