SHILLONG | May 12, 2019:

Former Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma said that he subscribes to the idea that there should be a proper inquiry into the ongoing conflict in NEIGRIHMS.

"If it is established that there is an attempt to derail the whole process of the health care delivery system, then they must be pulled up and action should be initiated as per law," Dr Mukul, who is also the Leader of Opposition told reporters here today.

When asked if the inquiry should be done by the CBI, he said that it can be a preliminary inquiry depending on the situation. " If the preliminary inquiry finds that there is dereliction of duty then an appropriate inquiry as per law should be conducted. The law will ultimately guide as to what is the further course of action," he said.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister lambasted the State Government for "failing" to intervene to resolve the present turmoil in the institute.

"This clearly shows the lack of seriousness on the part of the State to avoid this kind of situation," Leader of Opposition said

He said that it is really unfortunate that the people had to knock the door of the judiciary to intervene on the developments which are taking place in NEIGRIHMS.

"The people are seeking intervention from the court only when they are losing hope on the Executive. This is a reflection that people are losing faith in the present dispensation. We are sorry that precious life was lost. I condemn the attitude of the present Government. They are desperate to remain in power without a sense of responsibility," Dr Mukul said.

Former Chief Minister also condoled the death of the 55-year-old lady from Mawphlang, who become victim to this whole "tamasha" in NEIGRIHMS.

While lambasting the administration at NEIGRIHMS, he said that the doctors should have responded to the call of duty. "The institute should not be made a trial ground for internal fighting," former Chief Minister added.

FKJGP condemns NEIGRIHMS' 'childish' stand-off

Meanwhile, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has condemned the 'indifferent' attitude of the Director of NEIGRIHMS, Dr DM Thappa and Head of the Cardiology department, Dr Animesh Mishra towards the plight of the patients.

In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, PresidentFKJGP Central Body, Wellbirth Rani said, the current 'childish' standoffbetween Director NEIGRIHMS and cardiology department of the institute has nowclaimed an innocent life.

"A patient lost her life because of an ego clash initiated by the Director Dr DM Thappa, who prevented her from availing reachable medical equipment and intervention that could have saved her life," said Rani adding that the victim had waited 5 unnecessary days for help which never came.

He stated that NEIGRIHMS has always been in the news and for all the wrong reasons for the last one and half years.

"Quarrels and infighting, strike by doctors are the highlights and main achievements of the present Director. Staff and faculty are sick and tired of his dictatorial and whimsical style of functioning. His mindset and behaviour towards locals and local customs and culture also strike a discordant note in the relations of the institute with the public," Rani said.
