KOHIMA | Jan 07:

The Naga People's Front (NPF) held its closed door consultative meeting today at its Central Office,Kohima to discuss on Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) after two of its MPs — KG.Kenye and Dr. Lorho voted in favor of the bill besides the party's strong opposition to the bill (now Act).

The NPF Disciplinary Action Committee, DAC earlier had also served a show cause notice to two of its MPs which also led to the resignation of MP KG Kenye from the post of Secretary General of the party.

President Naga People's Front (NPF), Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu, while addressing the media, said that the main agenda of the meeting was to discuss on Citizenship Amendment Act, CAA. However, no decision was taken in today's meeting. He said the meeting was convened in order to listen to the views and opinions of the leaders and the Disciplinary Action Committee will be reviewing today's meeting after which a decision will be taken.

Rajya Sabha MP KG.Kenye was also present in the meeting till the first session; Kenye was given close to 40 minutes to give his explanation where he presented a series of paper as his justification.

Both the MPs had responded to the Show Cause Notice served by the party DAC; however, Kenye was given another opportunity to reason himself whereas Outer Manipur Lok Sabha MP Dr. Lorho's case will be taken up differently, said the President.

Liezietsu also reiterated that the stand of NPF is clear on the issue of CAA basing on the resolution which was adopted last year which is to oppose the bill "tooth and nail". He said the party would continue to remain with the people as "NPF party had always stood by the people as such being the oldest regional political party which has always believed in secularism and stood by to protect the indigenous rights of the Nagas in particular and Northeast Region."

He said people are fully aware that the Act was brought in purely on religious line, "a single track minded action to promote the interest of one particular religion, based on the theory of 'one nation, one religion'".

He said that India is known as the largest democracy in the world, adding that it was most unfortunate that those people in power in Delhi today are "destroying this very foundation of democracy and the greatness of India."

"We have seen that the Indians who stand for democracy and secularism are very much agitated today. In the same measure, Naga people are ashamed of what was done by some of their leaders in supporting this process of destroying democracy of the country," he added.

He said that the whole North East India is sparsely populated and that the whole India is over populated and, therefore, the government had advocate family planning in order to stabilize her population but, on the other hand, CAA will open the floodgate for a particular religious community to enter India to add to the present over populated figure.

He further said that CAA also indulges in 'politics of divide', to which he challenged the Nagas who supported this Act to come out and declare their stand openly. "As for NPF, party we do not want to act from behind the screen and, therefore, party will take this stand that for the sake of our future generations, NPF party will go against the CAA", he added.

The meeting was called by the Party President Dr.Shurhozelie Leizietsu with all the Central Office Bearers, NPF MLAs, President of frontal organisation and Cells, President of the NPF Divisions.
