SHILLONG | Feb 05, 2019:

What may be termed as a rare and unheard of case, doctors of Shillong Civil Hospital on January 28 removed a toothbrush from a woman's stomach, which she had allegedly swallowed it while brushing.

According to Dr Isaac Syiem, the woman, in her 50s, had come to see him on January 25 and narrated the whole incident. Prior to this, she had gone to meet other doctors, who referred the case to Dr Syiem.

X-rays were done but the toothbrush was not visible; Dr Syiem later directed her to undergo endoscopy and it was then that the object was sighted in the stomach of the patient.

After the object was spotted, Dr Syiem wasted no time in removing the toothbrush from her stomach using an endoscope sans surgery. "We used an endoscope, hook the object and successfully pull it out through her mouth. No surgery was needed in the process," said the medical professional.

It was informed that the patient was kept under observation for a few hours and was discharged on the same day (Jan 28). "She was not admitted at all," said Dr Syiem.
