Meghalaya: UDP clarifies stance on General Secretary’s remarks regarding Power Minister

The United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally of the National People’s Party (NPP), in a press statement on Wednesday, said that according to the Constitution of the UDP, the General Secretary is empowered to sign documentation authorised by the party.

The statement comes following a press conference on March 23 in which the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF), the youth wing of the NPP, stated that UDP General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh had unilaterally taken an ‘opportunistic’ call on his own to write to the Chief Minister urging him to oust Power Minister James Sangma along with the Chief Managing Director (CMD) of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) from their current positions.

“The party stands firm on its call for reasons that will be taken up as and when the Chief Minister, who is also the Chairman of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), is available for discussion,” read the statement issued by the UDP.

“The UDP regrets the fact that because of the paucity of time and the erratic mobile network arising out of the power crisis, it could not take on board its ministers in the government. However, as a party, we remain firm on our call, in the general interest of the state. We do not wish to wash dirty linen in public when the same can be rectified internally, and we leave it to the wisdom of the Chief Minister to take this forward,” the statement added.
