Meghalaya to hold first ever ‘Green Election’ for Shella bypoll

In a first, the Meghalaya Election department has decided to hold a 'green election' for the upcoming bypoll to the Shella Assembly Constituency scheduled to be held on October 21.

The Department will refrain from using any plastics during the entire poll process.

Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer, Fredrick R. Kharkongor, said that they are endeavouring to make Shella the first green election in the state.

Earlier on Saturday, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora had ruled out the use of plastics during election campaign and stressed on the use of eco-friendly materials.

Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer, Frederick R Kharkongor said that the notification for the bye-election of the Shella Assembly constituency has been issued today even as informing that the process for filing of the nominations will start from today itself.

Kharkongor also informed that the mode code of conduct for the bye-election will be applicable only for East Khasi Hills since the Shella Assembly constituency falls under the district.

The bye-election to the seat was necessitated following the demise of former Assembly Speaker and longest serving legislator of Shella, Dr Donkupar Roy on July 28, 2019.

As per election schedule, the last date for filing of nominations will be September 30 and scrutiny of nomination papers will be on October 1, Kharkongor informed.

The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 3 and the bye-elections will be held on October 21. The results will be declared on October 24.
