Meghalaya: Three including KSU leader arrested in construction workers’ attack case

Meghalaya Police, on February 26, arrested three persons in connection with the attack on construction workers at St. Xavier’s Girls hostel in Umoid, South West Khasi Hills on February 24, which led to the death of one labourer.

According to the Superintendent of Police, South West Khasi Hills, Maxwell Syiem, the trio has been forwarded to three-day police custody.

“We cannot divulge the names of the arrested individuals as an investigation into the case is still on,” Syiem said.

He, however, informed that all the arrested persons have links with the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), a pressure group in Meghalaya.

“One of them is the president of the KSU unit here; another is a member and, the third is an ex-KSU member,” the SP added.

On February 24 night, unknown miscreants barged into a room where eight labourers, working at a construction site belonging to St. Xavier’s Girls hostel in Umoid, were sleeping and started attacking them.

While one of them succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, the others sustained severe injuries. All the labourers, including the deceased, have been shifted to their hometown in Assam on February 25.

Meanwhile, the Dorbar Shnong of Shait-Shait Umoid in collaboration with the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Diwah-Umjarain area organised a peace rally to condemn the recent assault incident at St. Xavier’s Umoid in South West Khasi Hills district.

Villagers, Dorbar Shnong leaders, students, parents among others attended the rally holding black flags and placards to condemn the incident.
