Meghalaya: Situation improves in Shillong; Curfew totally lifted

SHILLONG | Dec 22:

The East Khasi Hills District Administration has totally lifted the night curfew in the whole curfew bound areas notified under Lumdiengjri PS and Sadar PS and their respective outposts and beat houses in Shillong with effect from 4 am of December 22.

The curfew was imposed in these areas since December 12 — Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Boucher Road, Mawlong Hat (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge) in view of the law and order situation in the state following the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Parliament.

The state government had also suspended internet services and SMS in Meghalaya since Dec 12 and the ban was only lifted on December 20 evening.

The state of Meghalaya along with the rest of the Northeast and the country have been vehemently opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 with series of violent protests and rallies being witnessed across the state, region and the country in these past few days.
