Meghalaya reports 53 fresh Covid cases with 39 in WGH alone

SHILLONG | AUG 10, 2020:

Meghalaya, on Monday, August 10, reported a total number of 53 new positive cases with 39 cases in West Garo Hills and 12 in East Khasi Hills.

The other two new positive cases are from the Ri-Bhoi district.

Talking to reporters here today, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman Warr informed that out of the 12 new positive cases in East Khasi Hills, one is an attendant of a patient at Shillong Civil Hospital, another patient's attendant at NEIGRIHMS, two staff nurses at NEIGRIHMS, a tourist taxi driver, four returnees, one Armed Forces personnel and two high-risk contacts of a positive case.

He informed that the two new positive cases in the Ri-Bhoi district include one from the Armed Forces and one tested positive at Civil Hospital, Nongpoh.

The DHS (MI) said that the positive cases from West Garo Hills include 29 from the BSF, 09 are returnees and one is a contact of the positive case from North Garo Hills.

On the tourist taxi driver case, he said that the driver is attached with the Transport Department adding that he travels to and fro from Shillong to Assam to drop people.

"The tourist driver was initially tested at the entry point since, as per the protocol, anyone who comes from outside will have to be tested. He (tourist taxi driver) was tested positive by the rapid antigen test," Dr. Warr said.

When asked about the reasons for closing down the State Dispensary at Rynjah in Shillong, he said that a patient's attendant from NEIGRIHMS had visited the dispensary.

Dr. Warr said that the contact tracing has been done and the high-risk contacts are the people working in the dispensary.

"We are doing the testing of all the staff members. If all of them turn out to be negative then the dispensary will be re-opened after being sanitized," DHS (MI) said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Warr informed that the state now has 611 active cases including 428 in East Khasi Hills (91 BSF, 268 others, and 69 Armed Force).

He also informed that the active cases in other districts include 06 in West Khasi Hills, 85 from Ri-Bhoi, 65 in West Garo Hills, 06 in East Jaiñtia Hills, and 02 each in South West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and North Garo Hills.
