Meghalaya | Rahul Gandhi asks PM to help trapped miners instead of doing photo-ops at Assam’s Bogibeel Bridge

SHILLONG, December 26, 2018: Congress president Rahul Gandhi has slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for having his pictures taken while inaugurating the Bogibeel railroad bridge in Assam instead of helping the 15 miners trapped in a 370-foot-deep illegal coal mine in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district.

In a tweet, Gandhi said, "15 miners have been struggling for air in a flooded coal mine for two weeks. Meanwhile, PM struts about on Bogibeel Bridge posing for cameras. His government refuses to organise high pressure pumps for the rescue. PM please save the miners."

Thirteen coal miners have been trapped in an illegal mine
in the East Jaintia Hills since December 13. For more than a week, rescue workers have been waiting for 100-horsepower pumps to drain out water that keeps flooding the illegal mine.

The authorities have been unable to find a single trapped miner dead or alive so far. The district administration is now seeking higher capacity water pumps from Coal India.
